What is VietQR, and how businesses pay against it

VietQR is Vietnam's national QR payment standard on the instant interbank network. Any Vietnamese banking app reads the code, whether it belongs to a coffee shop, an electricity biller or a motorbike rental.

What is inside a code

A recipient — an account and the institution holding it — and the currency. Sometimes a reference for the payee’s reconciliation, sometimes an amount: usually present on a till display, usually absent on a code laminated to a wall.

Why the amount matters

If the code carries an amount, the bank refuses any other, after your user has committed. Decode first: ask for the price, read what the code contains, lock an amount that came from it, and otherwise let your user type one. Amounts are whole dong; a decimal is refused before anything moves.

Merchant codes and personal codes

Vietnam accepts both, and they work the same way. Some markets accept merchant codes only.

The other rail

Vietnam also takes account payouts: pick the bank from the directory and pass the account number. Use them when you have details rather than a camera. Both are live and contracted separately.

Questions and answers

  • Can I pay a personal VietQR code?

Yes. Vietnam accepts both merchant and personal codes.

  • What if the code already carries an amount?

Pay that amount. Anything else is refused by the receiving bank.

  • How do I know whether an amount is inside?

Ask for the price first. The response tells you what the code contains.

  • Are dong amounts whole numbers?

    Yes.

  • Do I need the recipient's details as well?

No. The code is the address.
