What is UPI, and how payouts to India actually work

UPI, launched in 2016, lets Indians pay each other instantly from any participating bank app with a handle that looks like an email address. A business paying in from abroad uses an IFSC code and an account number.

Two different things that both work

UPI is a domestic overlay that gives bank accounts a friendlier name; the money still moves over India’s instant settlement rails. An inbound payout addresses the account itself, by IFSC code and account number, on the same rails. The money lands in the same account either way.

Reading an IFSC code

Eleven characters: four letters for the bank, a zero, then six alphanumeric for the branch, as in HDFC0001234. The code is public — on a statement or in the banking app — and carries the bank, so there is no directory to fetch.

Which rail, and whole rupees

The amount and the moment decide which of India’s interbank systems carries a transfer; what you send stays the same. Amounts are whole rupees: a decimal is refused before sending, not silently rounded.

Questions and answers

  • Can I send a payout to a UPI handle?

Payouts into India are addressed by IFSC and account number.

  • Where does the recipient find their IFSC?

On a bank statement, a cheque book, or in their banking app under account details.

  • Is one IFSC code enough?

Yes, together with the account number. It identifies the bank and the branch.

  • Does India pay out at weekends?

Yes. The instant rails run continuously.

  • Why can't I send paise?

The corridor settles in whole rupees.
