What a key is
A PIX key resolves to one account at one institution; the payer never learns which bank that is.
The five kinds differ only in how they look: CPF, an individual’s tax number, eleven digits; CNPJ, a company’s, fourteen; phone; email; and EVP, a random string the bank generates for people who would rather not publish the others.
Why it matters when paying from abroad
Three fields become one: no bank directory to maintain, no branch code to validate, no format that differs by institution. PIX settles in seconds at any hour, Sundays and national holidays included, with no cut-off time.
What you still have to get right
Send the key type with the value: a CPF and a phone number are both digits, and without the type the system cannot tell them apart. Collect a recipient name for your own records, even though the key decides who gets paid.
QR codes are the same system
A PIX QR code carries a key and often an amount: the same rail, read by camera instead of typed. That path is available too.
