What IBAN and virtual IBAN are, and how payouts use them

An IBAN, the international bank account number, puts a country code, check digits and the domestic account into one string. Payouts to the UAE and Egypt are addressed this way.

Why the format checks itself

The two check digits after the country code are calculated from the rest of the number, so a mistyped character is caught when the payout is created, before any money moves.

What you send

The IBAN, or in the UAE a virtual IBAN, and the recipient’s name. No separate bank code: the bank is inside the number.
