What is Transferencias 3.0, and how Argentina pays by QR

Transferencias 3.0 is the Central Bank of Argentina's framework for instant, interoperable payments: any bank or wallet app can pay any QR code, and money moves between accounts at once.

One code for every app

Before the framework, a code usually worked only with the wallet that issued it. Now a code shown at a till is paid from whichever app the customer uses, and the money lands in the account behind the code.

Accounts: CBU, CVU and alias

For a payout to an account rather than a code, Argentina uses three addresses: a CBU for bank accounts, a CVU for wallet accounts, and an alias, a short word-based name the account holder chooses. Any of the three identifies the account, with the recipient’s name alongside.

Questions and answers

  • What is the difference between a CBU and a CVU?

A CBU identifies an account at a bank; a CVU identifies an account at a non-bank payment provider, such as a wallet. Both are twenty-two digits.

  • Do I need the recipient's details to pay a code?

No. The code carries the recipient.
