What is Nequi, and how its QR codes are paid

Nequi is a Colombian digital account run entirely from a phone app, part of the Bancolombia group. People pay each other by phone number and pay shops by scanning or showing a QR code.

A wallet that is also an account

A Nequi balance is money held in a regulated deposit account, not credit on a card. Users open it with an ID number and a phone, and share the phone number or a QR code to get paid.

Paying a Nequi code

For a business paying from abroad, a code shown in the Nequi app is a Colombian QR code: the payload identifies the account behind it. The request passes the payload as read; the recipient’s name and account number never enter it.
